The girls in Shanghai...

...wear big square plastic frames. They are not quite the geek chunky types we are soooo bored of seeing, particularly on copycat teens, these are more like 70s glam crossed with TV screen-size shapes, in black or tortoiseshell...I find they create such an interesting contrast with minute oriental features...pure beauty!

More on Psy's sunnies...does this make me a fan?

I think I am taking a bit of shine to his style, and choice of sunglasses...

Sunglasses Gangnam style...now even in London!

I am so quick at picking up a new trend from it's infancy that I seem to be the only person that had never seen his moves or tried to replicate them in my living room (or on the London tube!) and though I may not attempt to style my next look on PSY's babes' ones I do like the choice of sunglasses, not just the Thierry Lasry he wears, but also the ones on the guy in the bright yellow suit, ha! I guess this makes Gangnam Style's YouTube viewers are at least one closer to a trillion.

Weekend in Shanghai

I was in Shanghai last weekend looking for inspiration...

vintage photo

vintage photo

Nop, these are not my latest street-style pics, these are vintage photos taken presumably in China in the 80s after the Cultural Revolution, when dressing western-style was no longer frowned upon. I found them at a vintage book market which takes place in the courtyard of Shanghai's Wen Miao Confucian Temple. I spent Sunday morning there trawling through (and buying!) Chinese vintage comics, a copy of The Little Red Book (in English), and of course a few vintage photos...

I will tell you more about the kind of eyewear the Shanghainese like to wear on another post soon...

Duct tape and the age of adolescence

Who doesn't remember that classmate in school who wore duct taped glasses?

If you have developed an unhealthy addiction love for Instagram like I have you will know what an amazing source of inspiration this can be. In fact, if you look carefully, this isn't just a pictures repository for pouting teens, cute kittens and last night's dinner and if you love eyewear like I do then you can also find an endless stream of blurry, analog-camera filtered (aah! the eternal love for nostalgia!), polaroid edged frames! These are some of my favorite Igers and if you can suggest any others that I should know about please post their link on the comments below.

"Suspense is like a woman...

...the more left to the imagination, the more the excitement" - Alfred Hitchcock

Here is some eyewear inspiration whilst waiting for the new "Hitchcock" movie, out on February 8th in the UK. The film takes a sneak-peak behind the scenes of Hitchcock and his wife Alma's marriage during the making of ‘Psycho’...

Botanical eyewear from Kiev

During my daily perusing on the net I stumbled upon Masha Reva and Syndicate's whimsical collection of printed sweater which, I can assure you, a lover of prints like me will try and get her mitts on!

Their collection is wildlife filtered by the net or Photoshop layered botanical illustrations and loading bars, wonderful! Check out the making of the photoshoot and the clay glasses which add a craft element to their contemporary prints.

Swatch Eyes

If you where a teenager trying to find (and eventually assert!) your look in the 80's you may have stumbled upon a pair of Swatch Eyes sunglasses at some point. What they did was allow you to play around with different patterns and colours (perfect for indecisive teenagers!), you bought the basic structure, alluminium and plastic frame and then the plastic front came in various colours and patterns.
Since I am no longer a teenager I have rediscovered their appeal and thanks to Photoshop I have been inventing my own with these beautiful patterns...though these are probably not quite what you think, mastery revealed here!

Algha frames...for the eternally indecisive!

I have wanted a pair of these for ages, so when I found them (after scrolling through millions of pages on eBay...good ol' eBay)  I had to buy a pair and they arrived today!

I am not sure why but frames with interchangeable plastic eyebrows seem so difficult to come across, I am sure everyone's granny had a pair in the 50s...they are probably buried in the attic now, waiting to make their way on-line or in some vintage shop for us all to look super-retrĂ³-stylish!

Movember

November is Movember, the mustache-growing charity event that takes places this month to raise awareness of prostate cancer (click here if you you would like to donate or take part). Here are some eyewear tips for the Groucho Marxs, Genghis Khans, Thomas Magnums and Hercule Poirots out there who think that a tash isn't enough of a statement!

Inspired by...David Shillinglaw's 1000 Faces

I recently discovered the work of artist David Shillinglaw, I am fascinated by his surreal portraits and I love reading all those words and minute details, they are like maps, these are some from David's recent project, "The Dance of 1000 Faces"...

If David's 1000 faces wore sunglasses, I think they would look like these vintage Jean-Charles de Castelbajac which I saw at the  "Framed!" exhibition a while ago.

Mykita&Moncler's new video release

As I am now counting the days before I board the flight that will take me back to my beloved Alps for Christmas (I know, there are still many days ahead!) I am starting to savor early morning rises, big hi-cal breakfasts, freezing cold wind battering the cue to the lifts and then...looking down at immaculate slopes you take the plunge! From city streets to mountain peaks...

For your eyes only...Mylon by Mykita

artwork by Eyespectacle
When I think about Mykita & Moncler's colaboration the first thing that springs to mind is Roger Moore on skis flying down mountain slopes chased by the villains, James Bond in perfect Cold War style!

For the past 60 years Moncler is been in the business of defining the look of performance-wear from the mountain-top all the way back home to the city, like Moncler, Mykita has done the same by combining technological innovation and craftsmanship. Whilst in Paris at the eyewear fair this month, I had the opportunity to find out a little bit more about Mykita's Mylon eyewear, this is based on the technology they have been working on for a few years now, which is also the material used for the Moncler sunglasses. This process is called Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) or more commonly known as 3D printing and the material used is polyamide, which is also used to make nylon stockings, you can find out more about how SLS works over here or here.

Though 3D printing may not be something that most people are familiar with it is in fact taking the worlds of fashion and design by storm! Thanks to technology, whether it's social media or manufacturing, we are witnessing radical changes in the way we experience the things we wear as well as the way these things are made. The shift is now from standard, mass-produced products (and eyewear) to personalisation, with people designing and making (printing) their own stuff.
Though it may take a few years before we'll be able press a button and a few minutes later a pair of sunglasses is printed in our own living room, we are already changing the way we look at 3D printed objects; that typical grainy texture and the solid colours generally associated to 3D printed objects are becoming aesthetically more pleasing, we realize their beauty lies in the fact that we have been involved in the process of making them and that there is a personal connection with these objects.

Though we may not have been involved in the manufacturing of Mylon eyewear (maybe this is the next step for Mykita?) we appreciate that these frames can be individually adjusted to fit our head, but the most appealing thing about Mylon is that it represents the future, one in which we will wear something truly unique, designed and made personally for each one of us.

This is how it all starts: the raw material...
