In conversation with...Anna-Karin Karlsson

I met up with Anna-Karin on Friday at Paris's biggest eyewear fair, SILMO. Having met her previously a few months back, in Milan, I couldn't stop wondring what her new creations wold look like, during the Eurostar journey from London to Paris! For the very few (I am sure!) of you who don't already know her, Anna-Karin Karlsson  is the soul and creative force behind the gorgeous sunglasses designed under her own name. Living in Sweden, she composes music occasionally adding her own vocals. Her love for eyewear turned professional when she got a job for one of the most renowned opticians in London, immediately after her degree in acting and art.

When you meet Anna-Karin you do really appreciate how much she is in-tune with her work as well as with the person she is talking to. Looking you in the eye and paying the utmost attention, she is soulful and free spirited, this and her love of music and art can clearly been seen in her work. Here is what inspires her:

Eyespectacle: - I know you have a past in stage acting and music, as well as gracing people's faces with wonderful eyewear, how much has that influenced your designs?
Anna-Karin Karlsson: - Art in all forms is the foundation of my being and  what I chose to do with my creativity will always have its own point of view, may it be a sunglass or may it be a painting.

E: -Your designs are like a breath of glamorous air in the world of frames, something not quite like anything we have seen before. When you first got involved with eyewear you worked for an optician in Bond Street, on bespoke projects based on traditional craft, how has this influence your work? Was it easy to breack the mould and create something as new as your designs?
AKK: - I'm very much in tune with the traditional skills and ways and I feel safe to experiment with the new. I don't find many things in life difficult, you just have to see your life as the one constant love affair with the beautiful.

E: - Tell us about your music, do you sing?AKK: - I've been in bands since like forever as a singer and song writer and now I'm writing film music when possible.

E: - If you could soundtrack your work what would that be?AKK: - Gnossienne 1

E: - What do you listen to when you are looking for inspiration?
AKK: - All from UK underground to classical, last year I listened to alot of Lana Del Rey she is an exceptional writer.

As a designer I always try to imagine the kind of "person" that will be wearing your creations, how this "person" will wear them, how they move, their voice, etc. However what sets Anna-Karin apart from many a designer is that she is also very good at giving that "person" a surrounding; the sound, the weather, the light, in short: her place in the world. Trust me it's an enchanting one!
