Cyrus Karibu at Milan's Furniture Fair

I first spotted one of Cyrus Karibu's mad glasses at London College of Fashion's Framed! exhibition later last year. Last month his up-cycle design process was the theme of a glasses-making workshop at Milan's furniture Fair. The results will make your mind smile!

As an eyewear designer and I am always so focused on following strict parameters of fit and size that I forget you can have fun when designing/making glasses as well sometimes!

Here is how you do light tinted lens!

After giving up all hope, the sun has finally decide to shine on London this weekend! And seeing that it's bank holiday today I might just get my aperitif-in-the-sunset sunglasses ready, you know the ones I mean? The ones with light tinted lens, perfect for when the sun is not as bright as at midday but you still need sunglasses to watch that beautiful, orange half disc slowly set in the horizon, cocktail in hand. The ones that protect you from the sun but that still allow you to see at dusk.

These lens where so popular in the 70s and here is some inspiration for you, from how they did them beautifully back then to how you do them, just as glamorously, today...through the decades in between!

Visors....Mmmmhhhh, really?!?

So, I am at Selfridges with a friend, trying on sunglasses (what else?!). The usual conversation in a miserably failed attempt NOT to sound (too much) like P'Trique, I sound nothing like him but he's sooooo much fun to imitate......"they are totz amaze!...Naaahhh!...Have you seen these beauties?!...How do you feel about yellow?...Those are crahhaaaazzzyyy!!!!, etc, etc.

Now, just out of the blue and totally catching me by surprise my friend picks up a pair of....VISOR sunglasses...Yes you heard correctly! What would P'Trique say?! What would YOU say/do??...You can choose on of the following options:

(a) you can't look!
(b) you look horrified!
(c) or you decide to be open minded about the whole thing and think back at all those truly cool "legitimate vintaaaje" (to use another P'Triqueism) sunglasses that inspired this die-hard look. This is what I did and here is my trip down memory lane, enjoy!!

The things #kids wear...

Instagram is this beautiful parallel world where you find lots of interesting things you had never heard of before and yesterday I found these really nice illustrations by a Brooklyn mom who draws a portrait a day (where does she find the time??) of her daughter and her daughter's friends. Some in these really creative outfits, some as rock'n roll as the defiant expression on their faces, here are my favourite...

Pantone 19-3336 TPX Lips

Here it is, the news we'v all been waiting for.................I just read that violet lips are back!! I know, I am not sure I am going to try this either, I have only just got used to wearing mine red. However! According to my new Pantone App violet complements Pantone 18-0435 (olive green) and since I am all about reading into numbers today, I think this means violet lips go well with olive skin, so my skin colour! Naaaaa, still not enough to convince me to try them, but if you are braver than me what I think they work well with are those retro' green mono-colour lens; violet lips can look a little futuristic so a pair of vintage sunglasses just create a well balanced look.

An unexpected present...

The past week has been all about presents for me. One particular present wasn't for my birthday (though the timing was almost perfect!) and completely unexpected. My friend Francesca, who is an optician, sent me two incredibly beautiful 50's "gems" from her archive. You must know that Francesca is one of the first people that inspired my passion for eyewear (unknowingly and unknown to me at the time), she sold these incredibly quirky glasses, filled with attitude and something unseen in in the relatively fashion un-savvy small town her shop was in (a million years away from trendsetting Paris or New York!), in the pretty much rural Veneto region.

I was around 16 at the time and had no idea I was going to design eyewear one day, Francesca's syster Federica, who is one of my best friends from high school owned a different pair of glasses for each day of the week (well, maybe I am exaggerating...but only just!), some where chunky and round, a la Iris Epfel, some crazy geometric and always in the brightest colours you had ever seen; you name it, she had it sitting on her tiny nose.

Well in true Francesca-style here are two new beauties, with attitude to add to my collection!
