Karen Walker's new advertising campaign

photo Derek Henderson

Did you see Karen Walker's new advertising campaign?

Here is a bit of background on the project:

Karen Walker partnered with the UN's Ethical Fashion Initiative to support and bring visibility to the work of artisan community groups in Kenya. Photographer Derek Henderson is the eye behind the camera, he portrayed the people that made the sunglasses handmade pouches.

Personally I find the imagery of the Masaai in traditional attire look a bit too styled...

These are my favourite images, they just look a lot more natural, the sunglasses fit, effortlessly, within the look...What are your thoughts?

How to recognise a panto?

Cate Blanchett's character in The Monuments Men was inspired by Rose Valland a french hero who prevented the destruction of tens of thousands of art masterpieces during WWII. Cate, like Rose, wears the panto.

Admittedly it's not this rather austere look that inspired me too find out more about this classic shape, but the film's poster I saw outside my local cinema the other day, where the pantos is part of a much more feminine outfit (plus red lipstick), in contrast and enhanced by the military uniform of the rest of the cast (all men).

Trying to work out who is to lay claim to the invention of the panto around the 1930s (is it the French or the Americans) raised some more questions:

Contemporary re-editions or original vintage?

Minimal design or intricately etched?

With a high top-bar and curled temple-tips (beware these will get painfully caught in your mane!)?

Would you wear this style?

Sophia Webster, from tip to toe

photo Vogue UK
My new office happens to be just a few doors down from shoe designer Sophia Webster's studio (!!!), this means that on my way to Pret at lunchtime, I can glare at all those bright graphic patterns through the windows of her showroom (you know how much I love colour and patterns)....I love her glasses too!

Art Mischief

Here is a very intriguing portrait by Kris Knight, a Canadian artist whose paintings of characters lost between youth and adulthood I discovered last week...

Painted India

I have been to India for the past three weeks (hence radio silence!) taking in the high-pitched colours, smells, car honking and delicious curry (every day, for breakfast, lunch and dinner)...India is an assault on the senses! Nothing is subtle over there and the volume is turned up on every experience. This was a great way to wake-up and into the New Year (Happy New Year by the way :-)

One of the many things I found inspiring is the way most small traders paint their shop-front making them one-off colour, illustration and font creations. Unlike here in the UK, personalisation makes every high street unique in India.

Everything is hand-painted; faces, auto-rickshaws, shop fronts, hands, trucks (even Bollywood stars on mudguards!)...just about everything! The colours are strikingly vivid, like nothing I have seen before.
